Name: Nicholas Gati

Birthday: November 16th, 1988

Place of Residence: New York, USA

Instrument: Keyboard

Hobbies: I love to write concert music and see performances of music from my favorite composers. I am really into classical music and sometimes drive around aimlessly while listening to Mozart, Stravinsky, Leo Brouwer, etc... I also like to travel and take road trips to places that I have never been. I'm an outdoors person and like to camp and go hiking. I am into cooking, I find it very relaxing and enjoy cooking with friends whenever I can. I am really into going to restaurants and trying new delicious foods and wines. Spending quality time with friends is a must for me in order to keep me sane since being a composer can be very stressful at times. When I am able to, I try to work out and participate in boxing and martial arts classes at the gym. Most of the time I am either writing a piece of music, playing guitar, piano or singing because music is my entire world.

Musical Background: I began playing piano at the age of four, singing at the age of eight and playing guitar at the age of ten. I was one of those kids that stayed in their rooms practicing for hours on end. I am mostly self taught, although, I have taken lessons years after I initially began playing. At the age of sixteen I began taking guitar lessons at a local music store with a great teacher by the name of Jim Gubitosi. He inspired me to explore the guitar as well as the piano and gave me some great advice that inspired me to continue learning music in depth.

After high school I went on to study music at Five Towns College. My major was composition and my primary instrument was guitar. There at Five Towns I met yet another greatly inspiring person by the name of Gerald Saulter, of Serenade Duo. He helped me hone in on my skills as a guitarist which led me to write my first classical guitar concerto. During my third year at Five Towns I began taking private piano lessons from a professor who studied at Juilliard. From there I learned that I also wanted a private composition teacher as well, so I searched. I began taking lessons from a great composer by the name of James Behr, who also studied at Juilliard. James inspired me to write music that I never thought I could write. He took me out of my compositional "box" and showed me a new horizon of compositional techniques. As well as guitar, piano and composition, I also briefly took vocal lessons at Five Towns College. This helped me realize more clearly how to write for voice, which ended up leading me to write a choral piece using Rudyard Kipling's poem: Butterflies. I now have a Bachelor's Degree in Music Composition with a concentration in guitar.
